Rabies Exposure Concerns in Toronto: Public Health Alert

Last Updated: 07/20/2024

Toronto Public Health (TPH) is actively seeking an individual who may have been exposed to rabies after handling a bat. The bat, which tested positive for rabies, was dropped off at the VCA Kew Beach Animal Hospital on July 16 around 6 p.m. Health officials are urging the person to contact TPH immediately to assess the risk of infection.

Rabies exposure is generally low unless there is direct contact with the saliva of an infected animal. TPH emphasizes the urgency of this situation and asks the individual to call 311 or 416-392-2489 after hours, or 416-338-7600 during regular business hours to speak with the Healthy Environments manager on call.
