The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Food Safety Alert following a multi-state outbreak of E. coli infections linked to organic carrots. To date, 39 individuals across 18 states have been reported as infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli, with 15 people requiring hospitalization and one fatality recorded.

Extensive investigations, including interviews with those affected and product traceback findings, have identified organic whole and baby carrots distributed by Grimmway Farms as the source of the outbreak. The farm has since issued a recall for the implicated carrot products, which include multiple brands and sizes of bagged organic whole and baby carrots. Although these products have been removed from store shelves, there is a concern that they may still be present in consumers' homes. The CDC advises individuals to check their refrigerators and dispose of any recalled carrots to prevent further infections.

Consumers are urged not to consume any of the recalled bagged organic carrots. Those experiencing severe symptoms of E. coli infection, such as severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, or vomiting, should promptly seek medical attention and notify their healthcare provider about the consumption of potentially contaminated carrots. The advisory also extends to businesses, which are instructed to cease the usage of any recalled carrot products.

E. coli infections typically manifest within three to four days following exposure to the bacteria. While most individuals recover within five to seven days without requiring treatment, some may develop severe kidney complications, known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), necessitating hospitalization. The CDC provides further information on E. coli infections on its website.

For queries specific to E. coli cases within certain states, the CDC recommends contacting the respective state health departments. Additional information and updates about the outbreak can be accessed via the CDC's official communication channels.
